Local attorney, Helayne Levy Payne, M.A., J.D., CDP, CADDCT, LL.M. in Elder Law, is now a North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission Certified Mediator. To receive this certification as a mediator, Helayne has met stringent threshold criteria relating to her education and work experience, completed at least 40 hours of mediation training, and completed the requisite number of observations by observing other excellent mediators through District 5 Family Court in New Hanover and Pender counties. She plans to use this certification to better serve families within her practice helping them avoid costly litigation and instead resolve family disputes through the mediation process to preserve family relationships and money.

Helayne Levy Payne is the founder of the Elder Law and Life Care Planning Center. The first of its kind in North Carolina, the Elder Law & Life Care Planning Center is North Carolina’s first and only member of the Life Care Planning Law Firms Association, an organization dedicated to supporting law firms that practice this innovation in Elder Law. Our Center offers quality representation to clients throughout southeastern coastal North Carolina. With an advanced Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) in Elder Law and years of experience as an attorney and counselor-at-law, she has championed causes through her participation in national, state, and local organizations to further North Carolina’s aging adult legislative and public policy interests.

Levy Payne is a Certified Dementia Practitioner by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP) providing resources and support to persons living with dementia and their caregivers. She recently authored and adapted two books; You’re Not Alone: Living with Alzheimer’s Disease and You’re Not Alone: Living as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver. In these short books, Levy Payne taps into her years of experience and education to help people in southeastern coastal North Carolina. Her goal is to share current and must-have information to guide those recently diagnosed with cognitive impairment and their caregivers to cope, prepare, and protect themselves. These short books are designed to be easy, quick reads, and offer practical advice on exactly what one needs to do when faced with a diagnosis.
