Is-Your-Estate-Plan-Up-to-Date

Changes in laws, life, and family circumstances make it vitally important that you revisit your estate plan every few years. Most experts advise that you complete a “check up” on your estate plan every 3-5 years.

The following changes in circumstances necessitate a review of your estate plan:

  • Changes in residency status. Have you moved to a new state?
  • Changes to laws. Your estate planning attorney can confirm whether or not your plan complies with any recent changes in the law.
  • Changes within the family. Recent marriages, divorces, the birth of a new child, or the death of a family member require updates to your estate plan.
  • Changes in assets. Updating your estate plan is necessary to get the most benefit and protections allowed under the law if you have bought or sold assets.

Whether you have had recent changes in your life, or if it has been more than 3-5 years since you created your estate plan, completing a “review or tune-up” will offer you peace of mind and reassurance that your estate plan will work as originally intended.
